Stephen Armstrong

Stephen’s principal interest is the creation and presentation of new work across a range of artforms and media. Currently Executive Producer of Malthouse Theatre, previous positions include Artistic Associate of Sydney Theatre Company, General Manager of Queensland Theatre Company, founding General Manager of Chamber Made Opera, and General Manager of Handspan Theatre. He has produced and toured new Australian works to the Americas, the UK, Asia, Europe and Australasia.

A graduate of Melbourne University (Literature and the History & Philosophy of Science) he has also worked as a Financial Counsellor, University Researcher, Drama School administrator and freelance consultant in performing arts programming and management - his clients have included London International Festival of Theatre, Sydney Opera House, Australia Council, Black Swan Theatre and Elision Contemporary Music Ensemble. He has served as a Board Director for numerous not-for-profit organisations. For the Australia Council, he was founding Chair of the New Media Arts Fund (originally Hybrid Arts), as well as serving on the Drama Committee, Theatre Fund and Performing Arts Board.

In addition to writing occasional commentary and reviews, he was a regular panelist on ABC TV’s Critical Mass. He has been a panelist and/or judge for the Patrick White Playwrights Award, the 2006 Melbourne Prize (Literature), the 2008 Premier’s Literary Award (Non Fiction) and the 2007 and 2008 Churchill Fellowship (Culture)

With Chamber Made Opera Stephen shared the 1992 Myer Group Arts Award. He was awarded the 1999 George Fairfax Fellowship, presenting the Kenneth Myer Lecture. In 2004 Stephen was invited to be an “international guest” at Theatertreffen, Germany’s premiere theatre festival. He delivered the Keynote Address at the 2006 Australian Performing Arts Market and later traveled on scholarship to Stanford University where he completed the Executive Leadership Program at the Graduate School of Business. In 2008 he was invited to participate at the Australian Prime Minister’s 2020 Summit. He was recently awarded the 2008 Kenneth Myer Medallion for the Performing Arts.
