Brian Lipson
Brian originally trained as a Theatre Designer at Central School of Art and Design in London; he designed shows for Lindsey Kemp and Ballet Rambert and was Resident Designer at Watford Palace and the Cockpit Theatre. In the 1970s and 80s Brian was a key member of three of the most important experimental theatre companies in England - Lumiere and Son, Rational Theatre and Hidden Grin, working as Designer, Devisor, Director, Writer and Performer. He subsequently acted regularly at The Royal National Theatre, The Old Vic, The Royal Court, Riverside Studios etc..
Since moving to Melbourne nine years ago he has worked periodically at MTC and Playbox and has been part of several alternative companies including The Eleventh Hour, ICE, In the Company of Pleasure, Stuck Pigs Squealing, Chunky Move and GoD Be IN MY MouTH. His solo show A Large Attendance in the Antechamber - which he wrote, designed and performed - received wide acclaim at the Edinburgh, Sydney and Adelaide festivals, was part of The Spoleto Festival in South Carolina and The New Haven Festival of Arts and Ideas and had one performance at HERE in New York. It has also visited small towns in country Victoria and NSW in a tour organised in collaboration with Hothouse Theatre and had a three week season at the Sydney Opera House.
The opera which he directed and wrote with Matthew Hindson - Love, Death, Music and Plants had a sell out season at the Melbourne Botanic Gardens and was recorded for broadcast by the ABC. Chambermade Opera has since commissioned Matthew and Brian to write another music theatre piece together. The large scale theatre work which Brian wrote, designed and performed (with Pamela Rabe) Berggasse 19 - The Apartments of Sigmund Freud had a sell out premiere season in the 2005 Melbourne International Festival of the Arts. Brian is often seen acting on TV and film and teaches acting at the VCA where he frequently directs plays. Brian has been nominated for 6 Green Room Awards and won 3 of them.
In 2008 Brian performed in Chunky Move's Two Faced Bastard.
