Stephanie Lake - Direction / Choreography
Stephanie Lake is an award winning choreographer and dancer based in Melbourne. She is the second artist ever to be commissioned twice through Chunky Move’s Next Move initiative – a program committed to nurturing the next generation of Australia’s leading dance makers.
Lake’s acclaimed full-length work, MIX TAPE commissioned by Chunky Move won two Green Room Awards including Best Choreography in 2011. In 2012 she was commissioned by Sydney Dance Company creating Dream Lucid for Contemporary Women, Spring Dance Festival. She has had choreographic commissions for more than twenty projects and has worked in collaboration with artists including Robin Fox, David Rosetzky and Missy Higgins.
Lake’s most recent work, DUAL premiered in Dance Massive 2013 and toured to Dublin Dance Festival in May. DUAL was nominated for a 2013 Helpmann Award for Best Choreography. She was also commissioned by Singapore’s Frontier Danceland, creating Axial for their 2013 season Sides.
As a performer Lake has worked with companies including Chunky Move, Lucy Guerin Inc and BalletLab for over twelve years touring extensively nationally and internationally. For Chunky Move she performed in Connected, I Like This and Two Faced Bastard and was Assistant Choreographer for the company’s production of Assembly.
Lake was a founding member of Stompin in Tasmania and after graduating from the Victorian College of the Arts in 2000 received the Green Room Award for Best Emerging Dancer and the Melbourne Festival Choice Award for TRIKE, a collective established while still a student.
Lake was the inaugural winner of the Dame Peggy Van Praagh Choreographic Fellowship in 2012 and is currently Resident Director at Lucy Guerin Inc.
